ANCIENT GREECE LAPBOOK BY JOSEPH, AGE 10-11

ANCIENT ROME LAPBOOK

FAVORITE THINGS FRIDAY

Well, today is another day for Favorite Things Friday, where myself and hopefully other homeschool mommies will share their favorite gadgets for school. You can see my other one but my favorite thing for today is Sticker Paper Since we not only lapbook but notebook, we LOVE sticker paper. I use it to print off thumbnails of people or things for my notebooks, timelines or lapbooks. I have put a link on there for one place to get it, but I get mine at Walmart. You just put it into your laser printer for printing and cut it out!

Have a great weekend!

Civil War Lapbooks

Just want to warn you guys that we did the Civil war over a school year so the lapbooks are large. Don't be overwhelmed but I hope you will get some ideas from it.

Here is the first one. It was done by my middle child, who was 9-10 years old at the time. His favorite person in the Civil War was Ulysses S. Grant (only because he won! This is my comptetitive child!)

Here is the cover.

You see here when you open it, these are mini-books about each battle in the CW. It has questions like what, when, where, who were the commanders for the N/S, Casualties of the N/S, and who won (victory).

The boys did two of these folds. I printed off thumbnails of 4 Generals of their choice on Sticker paper. On the inside, they had to write about each one. They have one in blue for the union and gray for the confederacy.

Below are two are accordian folded books on Salvery Life and the Surrender.

Below you see three layer books. The one to the left in Blue is the Union Statistics. The one in the middle is the Civil War Vocabulary. The one to the right, in gray, is the Confederacy Statistics.

Below is a closeup of the Civil War Vocabulary, done in a layered book.

Below is the other one. It was done by our oldest who was 10-11 at the time. His favorite person is Stonewall Jackson.

Below is his battle minibooks.

Below is a wheel, with drawings of different Confederate Generals.

Below is to the left, Civil war vocab in a layered book, in the middle a circle template he made to look like whip and he wrote about slavery and to the right, his Civil War Battles Map.

Below is his Civil War Battles Map, opened.

Confederate Generals, thumbnails using sticker paper.

Opened Confederate generals with writing. I used a journaling template for the lines.

Close up of Civil War Vocab in a layered book.

These are two mini accordian books that he did on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the Surrender. Again, I printed off photos for the Surrender (like a copy of the letter) on sticker paper as one of the pages!)

Below is a close up of his Union Generals. This is the same as the confederates.

Ancient Egypt Lapbook

Note, this is one of our first lapbooks. Knowing NOW that I wished I would have known then, is that we should have laminated the King Tut mask on the front of the cover. Now it is rolling up and we have to be careful. Also, gold paint looks great on a lapbook like this, but we did have a hard time getting our stuff to stick. Particularly when the inside is painted (Which now I wished we would have just left it alone).

Below is the cover. It is spraypainted gold with a King Tut mask on the front. I used my sizzix alphabet for the letters on the outside.

Below, left flap is name in hyrogliphics. Below is a pocket with pictures of the Gods and Goddesses where he made a game. The center is the different periods, and the right is the anicent book of mummification.

When you open it up, the top is how to build a pyramid, below is the ancient Egypt time period, to the right is a map of the nile river and then his name again in hyrogliphics. MISSING is an envelope with the parts of a mummy (like a puzzle).

MARINE BIOLOGY LAPBOOK

I am trying to catch up on posting my boy's lapbooks. Some of them are recent and some of them are not, but I refer to my lapbooks and need to get them established.

This one is done by my 13 yo son. He did Marine Biology from Apologia last year (7th grade) and did a lapbook. He did it himself with very little help. The only help I gave was for the assembly of the lapbook. Before I begin, I will just tell you that this is a very large lapbook and has 6 extensions in it.

Below is the cover:

Below is as you open it up, on the top you see the different Temperatures of the Oceans. Below is his vocabulary, shaped like clams. In the center left is the Birds of the Ocean and on the right, the different classifications of living things in the ocean and their categories. To the right is a trifold book, cut out like a jelly fish. When you open it, there is a narration of the Medusa Jellyfish.

When you open it up to the top, the top center is descriptions of a shark, scorpionfish, octopus and blowfish. Below it is a 4 door book talking about the different changes and effects on Marine Biology (ie oil spill, trash, climate changes and Environmental). Below there is the different migrations of the sea. There is a map and above are mini booklets with drawings of each animal migrator and it tells about them inside.

When you open the other top extension, you see at the top the anatomy of a crab and a story that he wrote about a Blue Whale and his friends. Below is a pie circle (don't know what they are called) with the food chain.

Now when you fold the center extension down, you have at the bottom the story about How the Sperm Whale Dives and to the right a trifold booklet on the Anatomy of a Dogfish Shark. Up above in the middle is the anatomy of a starfish and the anatomy of a clam.

Now when I fold the center extension to the right, in the center (back), you have these flaps that open and he describes different animals in the ocean and marine life with little diecuts. To the right is the zones of the the marine environment.

Now open the center extension to the right, and you will find on the left hand side, What do these whales eat with mini books talking about them and to the right shaped like a bible, all of the bible verses he memorized about oceans and marine life in the bible.

Now we are going to open the LAST flap, lol. To the right of How do these Whales eat, we have a layered book on the top talking about Fish Gills and types and descriptions and at the bottom he talks about exoskeletons. To the right, top is how to make a Hogfish knot and at the bottom right about different worms (tape, flat, ribbon).

Christians
by Maya Angelou

This is Beautiful, enjoy.

"A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ
that a man should have to seek Him first to find her."

When I say... "I am a Christian" I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'"
I'm whispering "I was lost, Now I'm found and forgiven."

When I say... "I am a Christian" I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian" I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian" I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian" I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible but, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian" I still feel the sting of pain..
I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian" I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner Who received God's good grace, somehow!

Pretty is as Pretty does... but beautiful is just plain beautiful!

FAVORITE THINGS FRIDAY

I will post on what is going on in our family later, but I thought up of a good Blog Challenge that I would love for all my friends to participate in. The Blog Challenge is:

What are your favorite Tools as a Homeschool Mommy? Now I am not talking about computer, books, curriculum, etc. I mean like TOOLS (ie Gadgets)! I will start with my FIRST one, lol...........

One of my favorite things I have to facilitate my homeschooling, especially since we love to notebook is my Proclick binder. This site has the cheapest one. I know it is an investment in the beginning, but it has been WELL worth it! Especially for someone like me, who notebooks ALOT!

Okay, before I begin, it is YOUR TURN my friend! I look forward to seeing what your answers are!

Voddie Baucham is one of our favorite speakers. He is a Reformed Southern Baptist Minister from Texas that has a Family Integrated Church. He has a ministry called Family First. Our family loves to listen to his inspiring, yet provolking messages straight from God's word. Our favorites are the Centratlity of the Home and the series on Love and Marriage (4 parts!). Here is the link for the downloadable MP3's. Enjoy! May this bless you!

Okay, call me nuts, call me crazy, but after having a discussion with a fellow homeschool mom in my group, I was intrigued. She basically said that her WHOLE year was using FREE cirriculum! Even dowloadable textbooks. That sent me on the journey with a NEW blog called Homeschooling For Free. If you have links to add, please email me here privately! Otherwise, I will try my best to put them into subjects and categories and add to as others are found! Enjoy and make sure you add it to your favorites as I continue to add to it!

Have a good day

WE GOT IT!!!

Here is the email that was sent to us:

Thanks so much to everyone who submitted pictures of their adorable puppies. They were all so cute I'm certain that Haverty's has had ian ncredibly difficult time picking from the bunch. We had Labs, a bulldog, Coton De Tulears, Bassett Hounds, German Short Haired Pointers, Shelties and Australian Shepherds. In the end, Haverty's has made their choice and congratulations are in order for Piglet the Bulldog and her owner Beth Noble. I have attached the picture we submitted for Piglet. I believe this picture was largely responsible for Piglet getting the job. The quality of the picture we submit does make a difference. Thanks again for submitting your pictures. Please send us pictures when your puppies have matured. They are all fantastic!

Got an interesting call today. Someone called about our bulldogs. He didn't want to buy one. He is an animal wrangler and needed a bulldog puppy for a Haverty's commercial. For those that don't know what Haverty's is, it is a LARGE furniture store chain with over 100 stores and 17 states. He submitted our cutie, aka Piglet (Nanna's favorite, my mom!) Piglet is Girl #1 BTW. Shooting begins in 10 days. We are TRYING NOT to get our hopes up, BUT it is difficult. AND when we have been through so much with the others, maybe this might help to recoup the thousands of dollars (no that ISN'T a misprint!!) that we lost with the others. We are just praying whatever the Lord's will is, so be it. It is hard not to get a little excited though.

Labor Day pictures of the Girls 6 weeks old:
Girl #1

Girl #2

Girl #3
She is doing okay. She seems more perky and is now eating dry dog food. She is still 1/2 the size of her sisters. She still struggles with muscle weakness, but is being more and more playful.
