As a homeschool mom....you have so many hopes and dreams for your children. You want them to be at their full potential (like all moms actually) but you feel this pressure because you are the one teaching them....As we entered high school (and still do), I have so many goals for them. One thing that I desire for my children is not only to be SOLD OUT for Christ and have their whole lives to live for Him, but also a "love of learning". With a love of learning, a child can learn basically anything as they go on through life.

When Joshua was 7 years old, he was interested in the Magic Tree House series of books. He loved them...and was a tad obsessed with them :) He came upon the Book Tonight on the Titanic. Let the obsession begin !! He read that book over and over and OVER. We had to buy the book and the resource book that went with it! He could not get enough books and resources on the subject. We not only exhausted EVERY SINGLE book & video (documentaries) in our county (AL at the time) but all the books from the next county over and the interlibrary system for the state!! Then we started his collection of books, which are now many (about 30). I didn't know if it was just a temporary thing or what. Boy was I wrong! He is still as enthused/obsessed about it...is on many discussion boards and has even communicated with Ken Marschall (the famed artist of the ship) and Robert Ballard (who discovered the ship). This has led him to other sunken ships...to find out their story. He has recently been communicating with the survivors (which there are few left!) of the USS Indianapolis and will be creating a study on them shortly!

Fast forward to 2 years ago, when he was 15. He wanted to get the real story out....about the people, the ship and other things. He wanted to tell their stories. When we researched online for Titanic Unit Studies they were short, not as detailed and some were even inaccurate...gasp. But one thing rang true about all of them....they focused on certain people, the crew etc...but didn't tell a story about them and their lives. Also NONE of them covered K-12. The maximum that they went was 8th grade! Bells went off for Joshua....he decided he wanted to create a unit study that would not only be accurate, thorough, but cover all grades!

He is now 17...and now that he has completed his Titanic Unit Study (Yeah!) there are some that will be coming around the corner :)

So you see you maybe sick of their obsessions, but Joshua's has led into not only a passion for the people on the Titanic and for their stories to be told, but it has led into other obsessions passions as well! So be encouraged! I know I am!

Fellow homeschool mom, Stephanie has given Joshua a great review of the unit study on her blog.
