Importance of Scripture Memory!

At our old, larger churches in Alabama, we were a part of their Awana Program. Since we have moved, we couldn't find an adequate Awana program that goes up through Middle School and High School, so we are doing more at home. Outside of our Family Worship time, one thing we are using is the "Contenders of the Faith series" Not only are they reading the bible for personal time (Mr Athletic is studying Rome so he is reading the whole book of Acts and other things), but they have chapters to memorize and hide in their hearts. The first set that we did (even Traveller), was memorize I Corinthians 13 (the chapter). The next one on our list was Ephesions 6 (Talking about being a Knight of Faith). Right now they are doing Isaiah 53. We take between 1-2 verses a day for them to copy and memorize.

This is coupled with the work they have to do with church. Every 6 weeks the boys have to memorize a passage (last time it was Psalms 27: 1-5) and they have to memorize a Hymn or a Psalm. The Hymn for last time was "O Father, You are Soverign". At the end of their 6 weeks, they present it in front of church (we run about 90, between 15-17 families) This time we are doing Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 17-18. Their new song is "O Worship the King" from Robert Grant, 1833.

There seems to be the debate over the contemporary style and the traditional style. Well our church is more of the reformed style. We still enjoy contemporary music, but what is beneficial to the soul? Which is helping to hide scriptures in the heart? What is nourishing the soul and not just the body? That is why we choose more of a Hymn and Psalm approach. Some of it is new for us, but boy is it beneficial.

That is all for today.
Have a good one!
